The basics

What is V2X?

V2X — vehicle-to-everything — is a set of standards that let vehicles and road infrastructure exchange short safety and efficiency messages directly, many times a second. A car learns about a hazard, a signal change or a pedestrian before its own sensors, or its driver, could possibly see it.

V2X is an umbrella for a handful of related links, named by what sits at the other end.

V2V

Vehicle to vehicle

Cars, buses and trucks announcing their position and movement to each other.

V2I

Vehicle to infrastructure

Traffic lights, roadside units and signs exchanging information with passing vehicles.

V2P

Vehicle to pedestrian

Bringing vulnerable road users (people on foot, bikes and scooters) into the same picture.

V2N

Vehicle to network

The cellular path to cloud and edge services, for data that is not strictly local or time-critical.

The two radios

Same messages, two ways to send them.

Europe standardised two radios for the direct, car-to-car link. ITS-G5 is a variant of Wi-Fi; C-V2X reuses the sidelink technology from cellular. They are not compatible on the air, and Europe has yet to commit to one, which is the single biggest reason large-scale rollout has lagged.

What sits above the radio is the same either way. The messages, the security and the maps are defined once, in the ETSI C-ITS standards, and run over whichever radio a deployment chooses.

Why it matters

Sensors see the visible. V2X hears around the corner.

A camera or a radar reacts to what is in line of sight. V2X carries a warning through buildings and around blind corners, from a hazard or a signal a driver has no way of seeing yet. That is its distinct contribution to road safety, and why crash-test bodies are starting to reward it.
