Seeing what your own sensors can't.

A Cooperative Awareness message tells other road users where a vehicle is. Collective Perception goes one step further: it lets a vehicle, or a roadside sensor, broadcast what it can see around it — the pedestrians, cyclists and obstacles — to everyone nearby.

The problem it solves

A car only knows about the road users carrying a radio.

Cooperative Awareness works only for equipped vehicles: a car hears another car because both are transmitting. A child stepping out from behind a parked van has no radio, and neither does the van hiding them. That blind spot is exactly where the serious collisions happen.

Collective Perception closes it. A roadside camera or a radar at the junction detects the child, describes what it sees, and broadcasts it. Now the approaching car knows about a pedestrian it has no way of seeing itself, in time to slow down.

What's inside a CPM

A shared list of what's out there.

Detected objects

A list of everything the sender currently sees that is not itself: other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, obstacles.

Position & motion

For each object, where it is and how it is moving, referenced to the sender so a receiver can place it on its own map.

Classification

What the object is judged to be, whether a car, a person or a two-wheeler, and how confident the sensor is about that call.

Sensor context

Which sensor saw it and how far it can see, so a receiver can weigh the report instead of trusting it blindly.

The message and its rules are defined in ETSI TS 103 324. It shares a common data dictionary (TS 102 894-2) with the other C-ITS messages, so a position or a vehicle type means the same thing across the whole set.

The catch

One object, seen by three sensors.

If a camera, a radar and a passing car all report the same pedestrian, a naive receiver counts three people. The hard part of Collective Perception is fusion: merging overlapping reports into one coherent picture, and telling a real detection from a sensor artefact — a ghost.

That gap between what is really there and what the network believes is there is measurable, and it is exactly what our live digital twin puts on screen.
